Jim is a former United States Magistrate Judge.  During his tenure as a Magistrate Judge, he developed a significant consent docket, where he presided as the trial judge in bench and jury trials.  His responsibilities also included the full range of duties of a Magistrate Judge, including resolution of discovery disputes, attorney fee applications, and case management responsibilities.  In that role, he also served as a mediator and settlement judge. 

Jim was also a litigation partner with Squire Sanders (now Squire Patton Boggs), where he led the firm’s Global Litigation Group.  In his practice, Jim focused on large, complex civil cases in federal and state courts throughout the United States.  In his leadership role, Jim was responsible for over 250 professionals worldwide, including the staffing of cases and talent development, and audited and advised on the firm’s most significant litigation matters.  During Jim’s tenure with Squire Sanders, he served in three offices:  Columbus, Ohio, Cleveland, Ohio, and Miami, Florida.  Jim was also a litigation partner at Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease in its Columbus, Ohio office before venturing out on his own in 2018.

Jim’s current portfolio of services and work includes a law practice to service a limited number of clients, to advise clients on litigation matters, and to facilitate court appointments and receivership work.

Jim also works as a leadership consultant.  He regularly speaks and consults on talent and leadership development, including programs for such organizations as the Association of Corporate Counsel Chapters for New York City and Central and Northeast Ohio, JPMorgan Chase, Nationwide Insurance, Honda of America, Vorys, Women for Economic Leadership Development, and the Ohio Women’s Bar Foundation Leadership Institute.

Finally, Jim serves as General Counsel to the Honorable Michael J. Rogers, who, between 2001 and 2015, represented Michigan’s 8th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, including as Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.  Jim provides counsel and assistance in the Chairman’s post-congressional activities.

Jim earned his undergraduate degree from Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan in 1984, and served on its Board of Trustees from 2000 to 2018.  He graduated from the University of Toledo College of Law in 1987, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review.  In his first position following law school, Jim served as a law clerk to Judge David D. Dowd, Jr., United States District Court Judge, Northern District of Ohio.
